# Check-in Methods

> The ways your customers can check in to your location — passes, codes, cards, and hardware.

## Overview

A **check-in** records when a customer accesses your location. Customers check in using whatever method you have configured — and they can usually use more than one. Every successful check-in is logged, giving you an accurate record of who was on site and when.

## How to access

Check-in activity is visible under **Operations → Check-ins**. The methods themselves are configured through the relevant [access control integrations](https://learn.nexudus.com/integrations/access-control/overview.md) and location settings.

## Available methods

Check-in methods fall into two groups: manual and automated. The methods you choose depend on how you want customers to check in to your location.

### Manual methods

With manual methods, either you or the customer records each check-in and check-out.

| Method | How it works |
| - | - |
| **Admin Panel** | An admin records check-ins and check-outs under **Operations → Check-ins**. |
| **NexIO** | Customers enter their PIN code, or tap their phone with the Passport app open, to check in and out. |
| **RFID cards and readers** | Customers tap an access card on an RFID reader to check in and out. The reader connects to a device that's linked to your Nexudus account. |

### Automated methods

With automated methods, Nexudus records check-ins and check-outs without any action from you or the customer.

| Method | How it works |
| - | - |
| **WiFi connection and access tokens** | Customers are checked in when they connect to your location's WiFi network. If their device stays inactive for more than 15 minutes, they're checked out. See [Wi-Fi Access](https://learn.nexudus.com/integrations/wifi.md). |
| **Access control systems** | Customers are checked in and out when they unlock specific doors connected to your [access control integration](https://learn.nexudus.com/integrations/access-control/overview.md). |

## Key concepts

* **A check-in requires a valid pass.** Regardless of method, the customer must hold a pass covering the location and time — otherwise the attempt is recorded as a failed check-in.
* **Failed check-ins are tracked.** Attempts that don't succeed appear in the check-in list with the reason, which is how you spot an expired pass or a provisioning problem.
* **Method availability follows your setup.** Only the methods you have configured (integrations, hardware, passes) are available to your customers.

> [!TIP]
>
> When a customer says "the door didn't work", start in **Operations → Check-ins** and look for their failed attempt. The recorded reason — expired pass, wrong location, provisioning error — usually points straight at the fix.
