# Chart of Accounts

> Assign financial accounts and tax rates to your products, plans, resources, event tickets and passes in one place.

## Overview

The **chart of accounts** lists everything you sell and lets you choose, for each item, the [financial account](/platform/finance/financial-accounts) its income goes to and the [tax rates](/platform/finance/tax-rates) it's charged at. Set up your accounts and tax rates first, then assign them here.

## How to access

Go to **Settings → Billing and payments → Invoices and tax** and open the **Chart** tab.

<img src="https://mintcdn.com/nexudus/Pe3pLOykvGoZdleH/images/platform/finance/finance-chart-of-accounts.png?fit=max&auto=format&n=Pe3pLOykvGoZdleH&q=85&s=425c34f292af8152f4d307c8b089ccc2" alt="The chart of accounts for plans" width="1440" height="900" data-path="images/platform/finance/finance-chart-of-accounts.png" />

## Assign accounts and tax rates

The chart has a tab for each type of item: **Products**, **Plans**, **Resources**, **Tickets** and **Passes**. For each item:

1. Select the **Account** and choose a financial account.
2. Select **Tax** and choose the standard tax rate.
3. Optionally, choose a **Reduced Tax** and **Exempt Tax** rate for customers whose tax type is reduced or exempt. See [Standard, reduced and exempt rates](/platform/finance/tax-rates#standard-reduced-and-exempt-rates).

Changes save as you go: there's no need to select **Save**.

Items without a tax rate use your default tax rate, and items can be sold without an account unless you require one. To make sure nothing is missed, turn on **Require all sales to have a defined tax rate** on the **Tax** tab and **Require all sales to have a financial account** on the **Accounts** tab.

## When changes apply

Changes only affect future invoices. Invoices already issued keep the accounts and tax rates they were issued with. To change the tax rate on an unpaid invoice, edit the invoice lines. See [Invoices](/platform/finance/invoices).
