# Finance

> An introduction to Finance in Nexudus — invoices, contracts, the revenue forecast, the ledger, deposits, payment gateways, and tax and accounts.

## Overview

Finance is where customers are billed and payments are recorded. It covers the [contracts](https://learn.nexudus.com/platform/finance/contracts.md) that bill customers regularly, the [invoices](https://learn.nexudus.com/platform/finance/invoices.md) they generate, the [revenue forecast](https://learn.nexudus.com/platform/finance/revenue-forecast.md) of upcoming invoices, and the [ledger](https://learn.nexudus.com/platform/finance/ledger.md) of every invoice and payment. It's also where you set up [payment gateways](https://learn.nexudus.com/integrations/payment-gateways.md) to take payments, and the [tax rates](https://learn.nexudus.com/platform/finance/tax-rates.md), [financial accounts](https://learn.nexudus.com/platform/finance/financial-accounts.md) and [chart of accounts](https://learn.nexudus.com/platform/finance/chart-of-accounts.md) used on every invoice.

[Inventory](https://learn.nexudus.com/platform/billing/overview.md) defines what you sell. Finance is where it's billed and paid for.

## How billing works

1. A customer signs up to a plan, which creates a **contract**, or buys products, bookings or passes.
2. Nexudus creates an **invoice** on the contract's next invoice date, including anything else the customer has bought since their last invoice. Contacts without a contract are invoiced when they buy something in the Members Portal.
3. The invoice is paid automatically on its due date through a **payment gateway**, or you record the payment yourself.
4. Every invoice and payment is recorded in the customer's **ledger**.
5. If you use an accounting integration, such as Xero or QuickBooks Online, invoices can be transferred to your accounting system.
