# Stripe Direct Debit

> Collect recurring invoices from customers' UK bank accounts by BACS direct debit through your Stripe account.

## Overview

**Stripe Direct Debit** collects UK BACS direct debits through your Stripe account. Once a customer has approved a mandate, Nexudus collects their invoices automatically when they fall due. It doesn't add a charge to your Nexudus subscription; Stripe charges its own fees.

<Tip>If you already use [Stripe Checkout](/platform/finance/payment-gateways/stripe-checkout), you can offer BACS there instead, by turning it on in your Stripe account. Use Stripe Direct Debit when you want a dedicated direct debit flow with mandate requests sent by email.</Tip>

<Note>The separate **Stripe ACH** gateway for US bank debits is deprecated. Take ACH payments through Stripe Checkout instead. See [ACH payments](/platform/finance/payment-gateways/stripe-checkout#ach-payments).</Note>

## How to access

Go to **Settings → Billing and payments → Payments and currency → Payment methods**, search for **Stripe Direct Debit** and select its tile.

## Before you start

* **An activated Stripe account** with a bank account linked to receive payouts.
* **Your live API keys**, from **Developers → API keys** in the Stripe Dashboard: the publishable key (starts `pk_`) and the secret key (starts `sk_`).

<Warning>Use live keys from an activated account. If Stripe shows a **Test mode** banner, or your secret key starts `sk_test_`, the account can't take real payments yet: finish activating it in Stripe first.</Warning>

## Enable Stripe Direct Debit

1. Open the **Stripe Direct Debit** tile.
2. Turn on **Enabled**.
3. Turn on **Available to members**, **Available to contacts** or both, depending on who should be able to pay this way.
4. Paste your keys into **Publishable key (starts with 'pk\_')** and **Secret key (starts with 'sk\_')**.
5. Select **Save changes**.

<Note>A new BACS mandate needs several working days to clear before the first payment can be taken. Allow up to 6 working days for a customer's first collection.</Note>

## Settings reference

| Setting | Description |
| - | - |
| **Enabled** | Turns the gateway on for the current location. |
| **Available to members** | Lets members (customers with an active contract) pay this way. |
| **Available to contacts** | Lets contacts (customers without an active contract) pay this way. |
| **Publishable key (starts with 'pk\_')** | Your Stripe publishable key. |
| **Secret key (starts with 'sk\_')** | Your Stripe secret key. |

## Manage a customer's mandate

Open the customer from **Operations → Members & contacts**, then open the **Payments** tab:

* **BACS payments (Stripe UK)** shows whether **Enable Stripe BACS payments** is on, the mandate token, bank account and Stripe customer. Use **Resend sign-up request notification** to send the mandate request again.
* **Payment methods** lets you add Stripe BACS details for a specific location. See [Add a location-specific payment method](/platform/finance/payment-gateways/customer-payment-methods#add-a-location-specific-payment-method).

## Troubleshooting

* **Payments stay pending.** Bank debits take at least 3 working days to settle, longer for the first payment on a new mandate.
* **A customer can't complete the mandate form.** Check the gateway is enabled in the customer's invoicing location and that it is available to the customer's type (member or contact).
* **Nothing is collected.** Check that the customer's default payment method is Stripe BACS and that automatic collection is on for them.
