# Languages

> Set the languages available at your location and choose defaults for the dashboard, portal, and notifications.

## Overview

Use **Languages** to make the dashboard, members portal, and customer communications appropriate for the people using your location. A language record includes its display name and culture code.

Go to **Settings → General settings → Languages**. You need the relevant settings permission or administrator access.

## Configure languages for a location

    Open the Languages list and add the languages your location supports. Each language needs a name and culture code, such as `en` or `es-ES`.

    In location settings, select the default language used for date and number formatting and the language used for portal and notification content.

    Check translated email templates, portal content, and any customised text before making the language available to customers.

## Language fields

| Field   | Description                                                    |
| ------- | -------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Name    | The language name shown to administrators and customers        |
| Culture | The language and regional format code, such as `en` or `es-ES` |

## How language choices are used

| Setting               | Effect                                                                                |
| --------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Default language      | Sets the location's default date and number formatting                                |
| Notification language | Sets the language used for customer notifications and portal defaults                 |
| Available languages   | Determines the languages that can be selected for location content and communications |

  Changing the notification language affects future communications. Translate email templates and customer-facing content before changing the default.

* Use the exact culture code required for the regional date, number, and language conventions you need.
* Keep equivalent email templates available in every language you offer.
