Navigation structure
The portal navigation is a single ordered list of sections. Each section becomes one entry in the portal menu, and every section can be dragged to any position and switched between visible and hidden. There are two kinds:- Built-in sections — four sections that fill themselves from your services.
- Custom groups — sections that you create and manage yourself.
Built-in sections
Every portal ships with four built-in sections:
Built-in sections carry a Built-in badge with a lock icon. You cannot rename or delete them, but you can reorder them, hide them, and add extra pages after the automatic ones.
A built-in section only appears in the portal when the matching service is enabled, whatever its visibility setting. Hiding it removes it even when the service is enabled.
Custom groups
Custom groups are sections that you create. They hold navigation items just like built-in sections, and in addition you can:- Rename them by editing the group label.
- Delete them (and their child items). Deleting a group that still contains pages asks you to confirm.
Showing and hiding sections
Every section header has a Visible / Hidden switch. A hidden section keeps all of its pages, so you can bring it back later without rebuilding it, but it is left out of the portal menu and the dock. Hidden sections are dimmed in the editor, listed with a “(hidden)” suffix in the Add into dropdown, and counted in the header of the navigation structure panel.Ordering sections
Drag a section by its handle to move it anywhere in the list. Built-in sections and custom groups can be freely interleaved, so a custom group can sit first, between two built-in sections, or last. The portal menu and the dock follow this order exactly.Navigations saved before sections could be reordered keep their previous layout: the four built-in sections first, in their default order, followed
by your groups. New groups are added at the end until you move them.
What appears in the portal
- Hidden sections are always left out.
- A built-in section needs its matching service to be enabled.
- A section with no pages to show, such as an empty group, is left out.
- Custom pages only appear while they are published, and pages restricted to members are only shown to members.
- If no sections are hidden and none of them has anything to show, the portal falls back to its default menu. Hiding sections never brings that default menu back.
Navigation items
Each page in a section is one of two types:Editor layout
The Navigation editor is split into two panels:Left panel — Page picker
The left panel lets you browse and add pages to the navigation:- Built-in pages tab — lists, alphabetically, the built-in pages that make sense as menu entries. Detail and checkout pages that need a specific record (an event, a course, a product) are not listed.
- Custom pages tab — lists your published custom pages (each shows its permalink).
- Each tab shows how many pages it holds.
- Search — filters both tabs by name (and permalink for custom pages).
- “Add into” dropdown — choose the section that the + button on each page adds to. Sections are listed in their current order; hidden ones are marked.
- Pages that are already somewhere in the navigation show an Added marker. You can still add them again to another section.
Right panel — Navigation tree
The right panel shows the current navigation structure as one list of sections, in portal order. Its header shows how many sections and pages you have and how many sections are hidden. Each section card has:- A drag handle to move the whole section, pages included.
- A Built-in or Group badge. Built-in sections show a short note about what they fill themselves with; groups show an editable name.
- A page count.
- The Visible / Hidden switch.
- A delete button (groups only).
- The section’s pages, each of which can be relabelled, dragged or removed. An empty section shows a drop zone to drag pages into; on a built-in section, the pages you add come after the ones it fills in automatically.
Drag-and-drop rules
Adding pages to the navigation
Add a built-in page
- In the left panel, select the Built-in pages tab.
- Either drag the page onto the section you want, or pick the section in “Add into” and press the + button next to the page.
- The page appears as a new item inside the chosen section.
Add a custom page
- Switch to the Custom pages tab.
- Drag the page onto a section, or pick the section in “Add into” and press +.
- It appears inside the chosen section.
Only published custom pages appear in the Custom pages tab. If you don’t see a page, make sure it has been saved with a Published status in the
editor.
Create a new custom group
To create a new top-level navigation group:- Click Add group in the header of the right panel. The new group is added at the end, its name is focused for editing, and it becomes the Add into target.
- Give it a name.
- Add pages into it from the left panel, then drag the group to where you want it.
Saving
While you have unsaved changes, the header shows an Unsaved changes note and enables two buttons:- Save changes — asks you to confirm, then saves the navigation. Saving takes effect across the portal immediately.
- Discard — asks you to confirm, then restores the last saved navigation.
